Click for route mapThe period 1400-1600 - Trading Elsinore

The Danish kings rule over all of Scandinavia. Elsinore becomes one of the largest cities in the kingdom after the introduction of the Sound Tariff. The Hanseatic merchants are dominating the foreign trade. After a civil war Denmark-Norway becomes Lutheran.

From Havnepladsen the tour goes along Gl. Færgestræde - one of Elsinore's old, narrow streets. We go to Sct. Olai Church, Elsinore's oldest building. The walk continues along Sct. Anna Gade to the Carmelite Monastery from the 15th century - Scandinavia's best preserved. From here we walk along Hestemøllestræde and Havnegade, where we get a good view of Kronborg Castle, the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet. We continue along Sophie Brahes Gade and Stengade with many buildings from the 16th century. We end the tour by walking down Strandgade.
